SOUDERTON — Souderton’s American Legion baseball game against Lansdale last Friday night was in the bottom of the first inning when lightning shot across the sky, forcing a stoppage of play.

But the delay didn’t seem to bother Souderton’s Brett Moyer — when play resumed, he went right back up to the plate and smacked a double to the gap in left-center field to break the game open.

“It was a long wait. I had a lot of time to think about my at-bat,” Moyer said with a smile, speaking of the one hour, 20 minutes in between pitches. “I just wanted to go up there hacking and put it in play, get things rolling for us.”

That’s exactly what he did, as Moyer drove in a run to extend Souderton’s lead to 3-0 in the first, and Post 234 went on to win 7-2 over the Cannoneers at Romanoski Field. The 6 p.m. game didn’t get going again until 7:30, so only 4 1/2 innings could be played, but that was enough to make the win official for Post 234.

“I told myself I was coming in swinging,” Moyer said of his first at-bat. “The first good pitch I saw, I hacked at it. The last couple games we had been struggling, but we really needed this game to get us back on the winning track and get the momentum going.”

After Lansdale (1-16) cut the Souderton lead to 3-1 in the third when Jim Staples tripled and later scored, Souderton (8-7) sent nine batters to the plate in the bottom of the inning, with Tim Maloney doubling in a pair of runs, and then Moyer singled him in to boost the lead to 6-1.

Moyer finished 2-for-2 with a pair of RBI.

“We got the bats going, and it’s nice when you can give your pitcher a two- or three-run lead to start the game out,” Souderton coach Marc Banister said. “All he has to do is go out and throw strikes. We were able to do that, and Klingerman threw a good game for us.”

Jimmy Klingerman threw four solid innings, getting out of a bases-loaded jam in the first, and he limited the Cannoneers to two runs off of three hits, and the righthander struck out two and hit two batters.

Moyer came on in the fifth, retiring Lansdale in order.

“Brett came in and closed it out, and that was our game plan,” Banister said. “We’re going to need Jimmy this week, and Brett’s heading off to college this coming week for some orientation and stuff, so we’ll be losing him and his bat out of the lineup. We knew we had him for this week, and that’s why it was important for us to get him in as many innings as we could.”

Moyer, who is heading to Penn State and may try to make the baseball team as a walk-on, is one of the quality players that makes Souderton a force in the league.

“Once we have a full squad together — we have a couple double-roster kids who are backed up with games on their other team too, but once we have a full squad, I think we’re going to be competitive come tournament time,” Banister said.

Tents for Haiti

There is a 30-year connection or more between the Souderton area and the Haitian village, Cote de Fer. When the earthquake struck Haiti in early January, 27 members of the Souderton community were in Cote de Fer working to provide the village with clean water. This blog will catalog the Souderton community's work with its Haitian sister village. "One person alone cannot rebuild a village, but as a community together we can."
