Man drowns

A 23-year-old Philadelphia man has drowned in the lake at Nockamixon State Park.

Bucks County Coroner Dr. Joseph Campbell identified the man as Ivan S. Khemiy and said an autopsy found the death was accidental.

A park patron found the man’s unattended boat and reported it, Obie Derr, park manager, said. Khemiy’s van was also found parked near the park’s boat launch, Derr said.

Friends and family members who were contacted said the man had last been seen late May 26 when he said he was going fishing, Derr said.

Rescue workers were unable to find Khemiy’s body on May 30, but located it around noon the next day, authorities said.

“It was found in about 18 to 20 feet of water,” Derr said.

Derr said he assumes Kheimiy was fishing alone.

Fraud

An elderly West Rockhill resident was phoned May 29 by a man who claimed she had won $500,000 in a Phillipines sweepstakes and told the woman to send $2,000 by Western Union to the Phillipines, Pennridge Regional Police Department said.

The woman sent the money and was later contacted by the same man who said the winnings were delayed in customs and that she needed to send $4,500 to the Phillipines to have it released, police said. The woman sent that money, then was contacted again, telling her to send another $5,000, police said. The woman did not send that money and reported the incident, police said.

Theft

Sharon Beer, 49, of Roseanne Lane, Sellersville, is charged with 33 counts of theft and receiving stolen property after between $3,000 and $5,500 was taken from BuxMont Woman’s Shuffle Alley League where Beer was treasurer, Pennridge Regional Police Department said.

Beer, who was in charge of the league’s checking account, began writing checks to herself around early March of 2008, police said. During a meeting in May of 2009, she reported the league’s account had more than $3,700, but the league president found shortly after that there was only about $100 in the account, police said.

Beer admitted to taking the money because of financial difficulties and said she had written the checks to herself hoping to pay the money back before the end of her term as treasurer, police said.

Beer was arraigned before Magisterial District Judge Charles Baum, Perkasie, and released on $5,000 unsecured bail, police said.
